Mama Brand Guide – An Interview and Introduction.
Mama B Brand – A Proud, Made In Italy, Product
Hannah Jordan of the Mama B brand talks to Norma James of Corbridge about their Spring Summer 2018 Collection and the clothes that we have selected for our customers instore. MDA INTERNATIONAL are the agents & distributors for Mama B clothing and look after our Norma James account in the UK.
Mama B brand was founded in 2008 near Turin and all Mama B dresses, knitwear and other garments are designed and still made entirely in Italy by an Italian work force.
Hannah, how does the company’s Italian heritage and production affect the brand Mama B?
There is a certain Italian style to Mama B – it is all about the cut, the quality, and that Italian attention to detail. And the fabrics are entirely Italian.
Can you describe the Mama B palette to us?
Mama B employ an imaginative, subtle, Italian palette and use fabrics such as soft jerseys, boiled wools and boucle. The trademark Mama B colours are soft, smudgy khakis; chalky greys; classic navies; cool creams; warm browns and the occasional flash of pure white.
To the spring and summer collection, there are very earthy tones. The colours all relate to the natural world. Let’s take the colours that you have chosen from our spring and summer collection for your customers: ‘osso’ means ‘bone’ in English – it’s a pale, delicate, eggshell colour. ‘Malva’ is a mauve plant – a soft, light mauve, a mallow. There’s an organic, a natural feel and look to our collection. ‘Sumac’ is inspired by a spice, a rich, reddish-brown colour, and ‘oceano’ is a deep, fresh sea blue.
What are the typical design features of Mama B? I notice a lot of asymmetric hemlines, a generous, flowing cut…
Mama B stands for effortless, simple design, with a real and dynamic edge to it. It can be quite bold too. The secret of its success is that it is fashion for all women. This spring and summer collection is ageless and timeless. Simplicity is key.
Mama B dresses and trousers drape the female body in a luxury of soft fabric and graceful curves. These are very wearable designs – gorgeous clothes for real women. There are asymmetric hemlines, yes, harem pants; bateau necklines and flowing palazzo pants. Our patterning is subtle yet distinctive – sometimes even minimalist – such as a soft stripe.
When can our Norma James customers wear their Mama B clothes?
The focus of the Mama B design is upon a gently flowing, feminine shape – these are clothes designed with a free spirit in mind. There is a wide range of clothing for different women across the Mama B collections – urban, professional, practical, whimsical and romantic. The aim of the company is to engender a true sense of wellbeing amongst the customers who wear the clothing. There are few straight lines in Mama B garments, so that you feel that you wear your Mama B clothes, rather than them wearing and dictating to you.
Would you say there is a particular Mama B customer, then?
Mama B has such a broad appeal – and we don’t cater for a certain type of woman or a nationality, for instance. Our clothes suit women of different ages, colouring and sizes too. They are for women who want to feel easy and natural in their clothes – and in their own skin, when they wear our clothes.
The typical Mama B customer influences her own style. You get very different looks out of our garments. It’s the very way that women put their outfits together that creates the style and each distinctive look. Many people combine say, a Mama B flowing top with a favourite pair of slim pants. Other women want 100% Mama B, a definite Mama B image. Our customers create a look all of their own – it’s completely individual. These clothes are designed to be layered, so that your summer dress looks perfect with a Mama B flowing sweater on top for an autumn or winter day also.
There are no rules. Our style is simple, effortless, natural and easy. Nothing is forced, contrived or complicated.
How would you describe the brand’s blueprint – their signature, if you like?
The fabrics are very soft. That is the handwriting of the collection – the yielding jersey, the cosy knits. Everybody who touches Mama B falls in love with the fabric. And the designs and the fabrics complement one another to maximise that very soft flow.
Is that why customers keep returning to the Mama B brand?
Yes, Mama B has built up a fabulous and loyal following, due to the nature of the fabrics. Women fall in love with them and keep coming back for more, season after season. It’s a very tactile collection.
It’s not just about the way you look: you look good when you’re wearing them and you feel good too.
Can you sum up Mama B for us in one sentence?
This is a proud, Made in Italy, product.
